Sistelo - Full day tour
Sistelo is one of the oldest villages in Portugal. Located in the Gerês National Park, This historic village is surrounded by waterfalls, wooden pathways along the riverside, cattle walking freely in town and very welcoming people that live in a very old fashioned and relaxed environment.
Food here is really a must. It is organic, locally grown and delicious.
Sistelo - THE VILLAGE
This old village is small and simple, yet fascinating.
About 10 different treks of different distances start in Sistelo, leading the way into the Gerês National park.
On this tour we explore a small and easy trek alongside the river, going through free cattle, local shepherds and waterfalls.
We’ll have all the afternoon to explore around the village before heading to our final Sunset viewpoint.
Photograph Sistelo and it’s amazing nature and local habitants (great portrait opportunities).
Along the way
Doing a private photography tour means you get to set the stops. If you see something along the way that you enjoy, we’ll do our best to stop at a safe place and do the shot.
There’s no rush. We want you to go back home with great shots and memories.
09h00 - Pick up from your hotel/hostel in Porto.
We start our 1h30m drive through a comfortable highway and then inland through the national roads of Portugal. Sit back and enjoy the change of scenario throughout this drive that takes you from the coastline into the countryside.
If you see something you enjoy along the road and it is safe to stop the car, we can always stop to capture some images.
10h30 - Arrival at Sistelo.
This small rural community where 273 people live is located in the mountain chain of Gerês National Park and is considered a portuguese natural monument. It has been nicknamed “The Portuguese Tibete” because of it’s simple lifestyle and deep nature immersion.
Right in the main square we do a quick stop for some coffee, water or a sandwich for the nature walk.
11h00 - The first trek is a 6km trek through nature. This trek is not hard and it gives you access to a beautiful view over the mountains and it’s agricultural terraces. This is the famous part of Sistelo that made it famous as the Portuguese Tibete. The views are stunning, the trek is usually very quiet and you can feel the nature surrounding you. Expect to cross paths with the local animal life, such as huge peaceful cows, sheep and with luck, some wild horses.
13h30 - Lunch break at Sistelo.
Expect delicious portuguese food for a very cheap price. With Starters, main course, wine and coffee, lunch is usually less than 15 euros.
After lunch you have some time to explore the village.
16h00 - During the afternoon we go for a second much smaller trek of 2kms. This second trek goes along the riverside, through wooden pathways and through a few waterfalls.
18h00 - finish the second trek and move to the first viewpoint, overlooking the Agricultural terraces (famous Tibete style landscape view).
The last stop is in a viewpoint overlooking the mountains with a 360º view. This stop will be planned with the sunset hour of your tour day in mind.
20h/21h30 - Depending on sunset time, you should be back in Porto right on time for dinner and some well deserved rest. You’ll be dropped off in your hotel/hostel.
Explore the photographically rich Portuguese Tibete and trek through nature in Gerês National Park.
Meet and photograph locals and it’s cattle in incredible locations surrounded by nature.
